Observational Earthquake Seismology

Course Goals:

The main goals of the course are
  1. To prepare students of seismology for further study of earthquakes and
    earth structure using seismograms,
  2. To provide an overview of earthquake seismology for non-seismologists
  3. To introduce undergraduate geophysics students to quantitative geoscience.

All subdisciplines of science have paradigms, problem solving approaches, and terminology. A secondary goal of this course is to introduce students to the intellectual frameworks, concepts, and ideas common in seismic investigation.

We will achieve these goals by studying many classic problems in introductory mathematical seismology (stress-strain, reflection coefficients, ray theory, earthquake location, etc.) and with a focus on the character and interpretation of seismograms.
