Wiggles 3.2.5

Wiggles is a simple little seismogram viewer/processor that I am working on to make viewing seismograms on a MAC possible. I use SAC on UNIX machines so the data format read by Wiggles is SAC binary (but it can import SAC ASCII, PEPP, PSN, and MichSeis formats). It is a Mac-Classic Application, I think that 3.2.4->3.2.5 was a cosmetic bug fix, but I did it so long ago that I forget the details.
Wiggles more or less a completed project. Please report any bugs to me and if possible put "Wiggles BUG" in the subject field of the message.
The manual is obviously a draft, and is stored in Adobe's Page Description Format (PDF, see below).

The major 3.2.0 changes include:
- The addition of Gaussian, trapezoid, cosine taper, and T-star filters
- The ability to generate spike series and teleseismic P-waveform signals (for a half-space velocity model)
- A water-level deconvolution command which allows you to compute receiver functions and source time functions
- An instrument deconvolution tool that will deconvolve a poles and zeros response using a water-level method
- You can also read in more than one file at a time if you have Apple's Navigation Services installed
- The documentation has also been updated, but it's still a little rough.
The 3.2.2 changes include:
- I fixed one minor bug and added an option to export a seismogram file as text (two header lines "ndata" and "dt:", and a single column of text).
The 3.2.3 changes include:
- I added portrait or landscape selection for printing
- I added buttons to allow the files in the list to be reordered
- I added a convolve command that convolves signals
- I added a cursor-based method for setting the time origin of a seismogram (handy for aligning signals)
- I added a palette of buttons with common processing commands for easy access
- I converted the manual from Word into Framemaker and added much more material including some travel time tables.
- The PDF manual has a table of contents with links
The 3.2.4 changes include:
- Just one minor change - I eased up on the tests for a valid SAC file to allow a less restrictive match with the value of nvhdr. If you had trouble reading in some files before (especially those written by Wiggles itself!) this may alleviate the problem.

This utility prompts the user for the source depth and P-velocity at the source, and writes a tab-delimited table of distance, travel time, take-off angle, and ray parameter for the distance range from 28 to 98 degrees. Keep the program and the JBtables file in the same folder. |

This is a drag 'n drop utility for converting SAC ascii files into SAC binary files. SAC ASCII is one of the formats that you can download data from IRIS's Wilber seismogram server. SAC binary files are the default format of Wiggles. You can drag and drop a set of SAC ASCII file onto the program's icon and it will translate the files from ASCII to binary formats. |

This utility overwrites the original files (it replaces the original ASCII file). Work with a duplicate of the files until you get used to this. |

Seismologist's Calculator

This is a utility for adding and subtracting times, computing moment tensors (Aki and Richard's (1980) convention), and computing distances and azimuths on a sphere. It's not fancy, just some utilities most seismologists have written wrapped in a little interactive tool.

Body-Wave Modeler

This is a really old application that draws "stick diagrams" for teleseismic body-wave phases (P,pP,sP, sS) for a given set of fault and propagation parameters. Seismologists use similar types of calculations to estimate the depth and faulting geometry of earthquakes.
Unfortunately, this code is so old that I can't even re-compile it because the Apple system calls have changed. I don't have plans to update it, but it still works, after almost 10 years. It should run on any Mac, and an SE was fast enough to handle the computations. Some features, such as the "Waveform" button, and the command keys were never implemented; but it's not a bad tool for 39 kilobytes...

System Requirements
The new applications were written using Metrowerks CodeWarrior and the application framework PowerPlant. They require at least system 7.0. If you have a Power Mac, get the native version of the Wiggles - it is MUCH faster than the 68k version, which is a universal version and should run on any Mac with System 7 or later.
The body-wave modeling application should run on any Mac. |
